About Diploma (Languages)
Jamia Millia Islamia offers a wide choice of part-time language diplomas. The Department of Foreign Languages teaches Turkish, French, Italian, Spanish, Russian, Chinese, Portuguese, Korean and Uzbek, and runs an Intensive Diploma in Chinese. The Department of Arabic teaches Modern Arabic Language & Translation, the Department of Persian teaches Modern Persian and Pashto, and the Department of English runs a self-financed Diploma in Translation Proficiency in English.
A diploma sits between a certificate and an advanced diploma. It develops intermediate grammar, vocabulary, reading, writing and conversation, and it is the qualification JMI asks for before admitting you to an advanced diploma in the same language.
Fees are modest. In 2026–27 most language diplomas cost between ₹8,675 and ₹10,675 a year, and the self-financed translation diploma ₹17,375.

Who can apply
Requirements are set language by language. In 2025–26, for example, the Diploma in Turkish asked for 10+2 with at least 50%; Modern Persian asked for 10+2 with Persian and at least 45%; and Modern Arabic Language & Translation asked for 10+2 with Arabic or a Certificate in Modern Arabic. Check the 2027–28 prospectus for your language.

Admission routes
JMI entrance test
Most language diplomas are filled through a JMI test. In 2025–26 the tests for Modern Arabic and Modern Persian each lasted 90 minutes.
CUET (UG)
Some are filled through CUET. The Diploma in Turkish was in 2025–26, and in 2026–27 the Diploma in Translation Proficiency in English was linked to the CUET (UG) General Aptitude Test (501).

Which language diplomas does JMI offer?
Turkish, French, Italian, Spanish, Russian, Chinese (regular and intensive), Portuguese, Korean, Uzbek, Modern Arabic Language & Translation, Modern Persian, Pashto and Translation Proficiency in English.
Are they part-time?
Yes, all except the Intensive Diploma in Chinese Language are listed as part-time.
How long is a JMI language diploma?
One year for most; Modern Arabic Language & Translation and Translation Proficiency in English run for two semesters.
Is there an entrance test?
For most, yes. In 2025–26 the Arabic and Persian tests lasted 90 minutes, while the Diploma in Turkish was filled through CUET.
How do certificate, diploma and advanced diploma differ?
They are successive levels. JMI admits to language certificates without a test, and an advanced diploma generally requires a diploma in the same language.
