About B.F.A. Painting
B.F.A. (Painting) is an undergraduate professional fine arts programme that develops drawing, painting, composition, colour, form and visual expression, alongside art history, aesthetics and contemporary, Indian and Western art.
JMI offers B.F.A. (Painting) through the Department of Painting, Faculty of Fine Arts, under programme code B10. For 2026–27 JMI held a separate entrance examination for it, so ordinary CUET preparation alone does not cover the JMI test.
Preparation needs observation, drawing practice, composition, creativity, art theory and time management. Students targeting 2027–28 should check the new JMI prospectus when it is released.
Who can apply
Under JMI's 2026–27 prospectus, applicants for the BFA programmes B09 to B12 need a Senior Secondary School Certificate (10+2) or equivalent with at least 50% marks in the aggregate of the best five papers. Admission conditions can change, so check the 2027–28 prospectus.

AMU and CUET (UG)
AMU undergraduate Painting
AMU's Department of Fine Arts lists undergraduate Painting programmes (Bachelor of Visual Arts and Bachelor of Fine Arts) requiring Class XII with Fine Arts or Painting as a subject. Its department information lists 30 seats, 15 for boys and 15 for girls. Verify the programme name, test and practical requirements in the 2027–28 AMU admission guide.
CUET (UG) Fine Arts
CUET (UG) includes Fine Arts / Visual Arts / Commercial Arts as domain subject 312. Each participating university decides its required subjects, eligibility and whether a practical test, portfolio or interview is added, so prepare theory and practical skills. CUET 312 is not a replacement for JMI B10.

- Follow the sequence observe, sketch, correct proportion, develop form, add tone or colour, review
- Practise theme-based and colour compositions

- Avoid memorised compositions, dirty shading, random colour and overcrowding
- Take timed drawing tests and full mock tests with feedback

What is the JMI B.F.A. Painting programme code?
Under the latest JMI admission structure, B.F.A. (Painting) has programme code B10. It is an eight-semester programme of the Department of Painting, Faculty of Fine Arts.
What is the eligibility for JMI B.F.A. Painting?
Under the 2026–27 prospectus, BFA programmes B09 to B12 require 10+2 or equivalent with at least 50% marks in the aggregate of the best five papers. Check the 2027–28 prospectus for changes.
Do I need Fine Arts in Class XII for JMI B.F.A. Painting?
JMI's 2026–27 general BFA eligibility asks for 10+2 with 50% in the best five papers. AMU, however, asks for Fine Arts or Painting as a Class XII subject for its undergraduate Painting programme.
Is CUET enough for all B.F.A. Painting admissions?
No. JMI has its own B.F.A. Painting entrance, and other institutions may add practical tests, interviews or their own procedures.
Is CUET available for Fine Arts?
Yes. CUET (UG) lists Fine Arts / Visual Arts / Commercial Arts as domain subject 312. The subject combination and any practical test depend on the university.
