Overview

About B.E. Mechanical Engineering

JMI offers B.E. Mechanical Engineering (Evening), a self-financed programme of the Faculty of Engineering & Technology. Under the 2026–27 structure it has programme code B17, runs for six semesters with 60 seats, and classes are held from 6:30 pm to 9:30 pm.

The programme is meant for eligible diploma holders who want to upgrade their qualification. Its entrance test is not a Class XII PCM paper: it tests core diploma mechanical engineering subjects, so a generic PCM coaching course is not enough.

Students targeting 2027–28 should prepare on the latest available syllabus and check for changes when JMI publishes the new prospectus.

Exam pattern

JMI B.E. Mechanical Engineering entrance paper

AreaWhat it covers
Engineering MechanicsStatics, dynamics, machines, friction and fluid mechanics
DesignStrength of materials and machine elements
Production EngineeringManufacturing processes, metal cutting and industrial management
Thermal EngineeringThermodynamics, steam, boilers, turbines, IC engines and refrigeration

JMI's syllabus states one paper with questions from these four areas, at the standard of a three-year Diploma (Mechanical) examination of polytechnics. Question counts and weightage are not given; check the 2027–28 prospectus.

Eligibility

Who can apply

Under the JMI 2026–27 requirements, candidates need a three- or four-year diploma in the relevant or allied branch from a recognised polytechnic or technical institute, and at least one year of professional experience after the diploma in the concerned or related branch, subject to JMI's full conditions. Verify the eligibility in the prospectus for your admission year.

Other admission routes

AMU and CUET (UG)

AMU Mechanical Engineering

AMU's Department of Mechanical Engineering offers B.Tech. Mechanical Engineering, which is a separate programme with its own admission structure. It is not the same examination as JMI B17; follow the AMU Guide to Admissions for the relevant session.

CUET (UG)

CUET (UG) is used only for programmes that participating universities map to it, and it is not the route for every B.E. or B.Tech. Mechanical programme. Check whether your target university admits through CUET, JEE Main or its own test, and its subject and eligibility rules.
